Volunteers are ready to serve on Christmas Day

A Christmas Day lunch is being cooked at a church in Swansea to offer those who would otherwise be alone on the big day a free festive dinner and the chance to socialise with others.

Volunteers are taking time out of their day to help spread a little festive cheer for others on December 25.

Staff from Swansea Council's St. John's Day Service in Manselton are working with Christ Well United Reform Church to lay on a Christmas lunch at the church.

The fun starts at 12.30pm and there is still room at the table.

Assistant Manager at St. John's, Amanda Gallivan, is one of those volunteering. She said: "The help we have had has been wonderful and we have been lucky enough to get supermarkets to support us. The turkeys will be from Marks & Spencer.

"We are catering for up to 40 people and there are still places available so if someone is alone please come and join us - but please let us know beforehand you are coming!"

Rosie Buxton, Community Minister at Christ Well Church, added: "It's the first time we've done this and we've had lots of volunteers who want to do something meaningful at Christmas.

"It's going to be a little like having your family around for Christmas only there will be about 50 or so people when you include the volunteers."

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Mark Child, said: "With an ageing population loneliness is an increasing issue facing our society today.

"We can all do a little bit by calling in to see neighbours, relatives and friends but these volunteers who are taking time out of their Christmas Day really are going that extra mile.

"The wonderful community spirit we have in Swansea never ceases to amaze me and I'd like to say a big thank-you to all involved and wish them a very merry Christmas.

"I would also like to thank other staff who work for Swansea's Social Services, including contractors, who will be working Christmas Day either at care settings or visiting people at their homes. They are unsung heroes and I hope that they find time to enjoy at least part of their day with family or friends."

If you would like to attend the lunch at Christ Well, or know someone who would, please contact the organisers in advance on 01792 456593.
