Final preparations for Swansea's Christmas Parade

Taking inspiration from winter and Christmas-themed movies and events, final preparations are now being made on a selection of festive floats that will feature in this Sunday's Christmas Parade.

Being held on Sunday November 19, the Christmas Parade will include floats celebrating films including Frozen, Snow White and Cinderella.

Organised by Swansea Council, the parade will start at about 5pm, making its way along Wind Street, High Street, Orchard Street and the Kingsway before finishing in the area of the Grand Theatre.

Santa will switch on the city centre's Christmas lights close to a real Christmas tree, sponsored by Unison, on the Kingsway end of Princess Way.

Inspired by the Polar Express movie, Swansea Bay's land train is also being decorated for the parade.

Other features will include characters themed on Beauty and the Beast.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "As well as floats taking inspiration from popular winter and Christmas-themed movies and events, this year's Christmas Parade will also feature marching bands, dance groups and other festive entertainment.

"In addition to the start of Waterfront Winterland at Museum Park and the arrival of the Christmas Market on Oxford Street, the family-friendly Christmas Parade will mark the start of the countdown to Christmas in Swansea with a bumper weekend of festive fun.

"Part of the 'It's Christmas in Swansea' programme of events and activities, we're sure these attractions and others will generate a fantastic festive atmosphere and boost trade for our city centre businesses."

Seasonal, futuristic hoverboarders will also feature at the Christmas Parade, as well as giant inflatables with a Christmas twist. Other Christmas fun will include Waterfront Winterland, opening at Museum Park at 5pm on Friday November 17, and the Christmas Market, which opens on Oxford Street at 9.30am on Friday November 17.

To accommodate the Christmas Parade, the following road closures will be in place on Sunday from 4.15pm to 6.30pm:

* East Burrows Road from its junction with Somerset Place to its junction with Cambrian Place

* Victoria Road/Quay Parade at the junction with Wind Street, while the parade crosses over between Somerset Place and Wind Street. This will be for a short period of time and will be done in blocks so traffic can still flow.

* Somerset Place, Ferry Side, Bath Lane, Adelaide Street, Wind Street, Caer Street, Castle Bailey Street and College Street for their whole length

* High Street from its junction with College Street to the train station

* Alexandra Road from the junction of High Street and Orchard Street

* Orchard Street to the junction of Kingsway

* Kingsway to the junction with Dillwyn Street

* Singleton Street concluding at the Grand Theatre car park

Parking prohibitions, no waiting orders and tow-away orders will be in place along the entire route between 3pm and 8pm.
