Tourism businesses celebrated at awards evening

Swansea Bay's rich variety of tourism businesses have been celebrated in an awards evening at the city's Brangwyn Hall.

The Swansea Bay Tourism Awards 2017 celebrated an industry that's now worth over £400 million a year to Swansea Bay.

For the first time ever, the awards, made up of 21 categories, were organised in partnership by Tourism Swansea Bay and Swansea Council.

Winners on the night included Gower Coast Adventures, for best activity provider; the Village Hotel, for best large hotel; and Suzanne Morrison, for best tourism ambassador, recognising her work in promoting the destination to visitors with disabilities.

Other winners included Reynoldston's King Arthur Hotel, for best inn; the Rake and Riddle in Penclawdd, for best new tourism business; and the LC, for best attraction.

The winners for best event or festival were the Gower Agriculture Society for the Gower Show, and Swansea Council for the Wales Airshow and Proms in the Park.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "Over 500 people attended the Swansea Bay Tourism Awards 2017, which speaks volumes for the enthusiasm of the tourism industry here and the close partnership working between the council, Tourism Swansea Bay and our fantastic variety range of tourism businesses.

"Tourism already makes a significant contribution to Swansea Bay's economy, but the dedication of our tourism businesses, alongside some of the major projects in the pipeline for Swansea, means the industry has even more to look forward to in coming years.

"Swansea is on the shortlist to be named UK City of Culture 2021 next month, with attractions like a state-of-the-art digital indoor arena set to be constructed in the city centre as well, helping further boost a thriving local visitor economy.

"With a decision on the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon also expected soon and talks on-going about a new cable car and luge attraction on Kilvey Hill, these are exciting times for destination Swansea Bay.

"Our tourism businesses will undoubtedly continue to help Swansea Bay buck national tourism trends by helping demonstrate year-on-year growth in the tourism sector as the destination's profile is further raised around the world."

Stephen Crocker, Chairman of Tourism Swansea Bay, said: "Historically we have organised these awards, but we are delighted that we were able to collaborate with Swansea Council for 2017 and hopefully for future years to come.

"The public and private sector work closely together throughout the year, continually developing a destination management plan for the benefit of visitors to Swansea Bay, so the awards are an important way of recognising and celebrating some of the great work that takes place.  We look forward to developing this relationship further to ensure we are celebrating successes and motivating the next generation of tourism professionals, also helping ensure the sustainability of the awards.

"We want to encourage young people into the tourism industry, with the success of the local sector showing there's a great future for tourism here."
