Festive fun arranged for Waterfront Winterland launch party

A stilt-walking ice man juggler, ice skating demonstrations and a staged area with Christmas music will help kick-start festive fun at Swansea's Waterfront Winterland attraction later this week.

The Museum Park attraction, which is opening for 2017 on Friday November 17 at 5pm, is organised by Swansea Council.

Also featuring at the opening evening launch party are fire jugglers, courtesy of Jimmy Juggle Entertainments.

Thousands of people are again expected to enjoy fun including the main Admiral ice rink, a smaller Admiral ice rink for children and the 100-foot giant wheel until January 7.

New for 2017 will be the indoor Moose Head Bierkeller, serving mulled wine and traditional beers.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "Work to construct Waterfront Winterland 2017 is now well under way at Museum Park, as we continue to make our preparations for Friday evening's launch party.

"As well as the additional fun that's being arranged for the evening itself, Waterfront Winterland will once again feature two ice rinks, the giant wheel, Santa's grotto and Alpine-style dining cabins.

"The funfair will include two new rides for 2017 - Sky View and Space - as well as a ride called Snow Storm and rides like the traditional carousel for people who'd prefer a more gentle experience.

"We've even got an ice skating duo soon performing at the British championships giving a display on Friday evening, so there's lots for people to look forward to.

"Waterfront Winterland is one of many attractions forming part of the 'It's Christmas in Swansea' series of events and activities this year."

Also open every day from Friday November 17 is the Christmas Market on Oxford Street, featuring over 40 red and green festive chalets. Selling arts and crafts, festive foods, decorations and gifts, the Christmas Market, which includes a Christmas bar and runs until Thursday December 21, will be open from 9.30am to 5.30pm from Mondays to Saturdays, and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

Santa's Grotto will be set up on Portland Street near Castle Square from Saturday November 18 to Thursday December 21, giving visitors the chance to receive a Christmas gift and have their photos taken with Santa.

The city centre's Christmas tree, sponsored by Unison, is now in place at the Kingsway end of Princess Way in time for the Christmas Parade, which returns to Swansea on Sunday November 19.

Late-night shopping will be available in the city centre every Thursday in the build-up to Christmas.
