New look and feel plan for Townhill Library

Townhill Library will soon be given a new look and feel, thanks to a refurbishment project starting next month.

Lasting from Monday November 6 to late January 2018, the refurbishment will include new shelves and furniture, as well as changes to the library's layout.

Swansea Council is behind the refurbishment, with funding worth about £125,000 from the Welsh Government's Museums, Archives and Libraries Division.

The library, located at the Phoenix Centre on Powys Avenue, will be closed throughout the refurbishment, with alternative libraries available for users at Sketty, Brynhyfryd, Fforestfach and Swansea Central.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "The refurbishment project at Townhill Library will help accommodate changes needed at the Phoenix Centre by the Hill Community Development Trust, but it will also give the library a new look and feel, thanks to remodelling of the existing space and the introduction of new shelving and furniture. This will benefit Townhill Library users when the facility re-opens towards the end of January next year because it will help meet their future needs.

"The nature of the project means the library will have to temporarily close throughout the works, but users will be signposted to other community libraries not too far away while the refurbishment works are on-going.

"We'll be doing all we can over coming weeks to inform Townhill Library users about the project and the forthcoming temporary closure as we look to minimise disruption."

An engagement day is being held at Townhill Library on Monday October 23, where library users and the local community will have the chance to talk to staff about the work that's planned and learn about other ways of accessing library services while the library is closed.

Library staff will also continue to be available at the Phoenix Centre during the first few weeks of the library's closure to signpost library users to alternative library services.
