The hit 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John will be shown on Castle Square's Big Screen on Saturday September 30 as part of the Swansea Big Weekend event, giving people the chance to sing along and join in the fun with interactive characters and props.

Organised by Swansea Council, the Swansea Big Weekend event, taking place on Friday September 29 and Saturday September 30, will celebrate the city centre's vibrant and diverse evening and night-time economy.

Starting at 4pm on each day, the event will also include live rock and pop music with the much-awaited return of the Swansea Fringe Festival in venues on High Street, Castle Street and beyond.

Poetry, comedy and talks are also being arranged for the event, as well as pop-up entertainment including street dance, stilt walking, fire juggling, classical guitar performances and drum bands.

Creative Bubble will be on hand with a summer stage, with money-off promotions for Big Heart of Swansea Loyalty Card holders available from a range of businesses.

The people behind the successful Uplands Market, Urban Foundry, will also be organising a street food market in the Castle Square area on the Friday evening from 4pm until 9pm.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Major Projects, said: "Supported by the Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) and other organisations, the Swansea Big Weekend is aimed at supporting Swansea city centre's award-winning evening and night-time economy.

"Earlier this summer, the city centre retained its prestigious Purple Flag status, which shows it's a place where visitors can expect an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out.

"The Swansea Big Weekend will celebrate everything that's great about the city centre, helping showcase local talent and boost trade for our businesses.

"It also forms part of Swansea's drive to become the 2021 City of Culture as part of an ongoing programme of events in the city centre that will entertain visitors and generate more footfall and spending for traders".

Swansea city centre was first awarded Purple Flag status in 2015 in recognition of the way it manages its evening and night time sector. As part of the accreditation, the independent assessors complimented the strength of the partnership where the council works alongside partners including Swansea BID, South Wales Police, the office of the Police Crime Commissioner, both city universities, AMBU, Coastal Housing and the voluntary sector to deliver schemes including street pastors, taxi marshals and a help point to improve the city centre's evening and night-time visitor experience.
