Communities Chest funding worth £129,000 is up for grabs until the end of March next year, so Swansea Council is encouraging applications.

A Sport Wales grant aid scheme funded by the National Lottery, Communities Chest funding is aimed at supporting individuals, clubs, teams or organisations to help create a more active Wales.

Under the annual scheme, a maximum of £1,500 is available for each club or organisation that makes a successful application.

Bonymaen RFC and Mumbles Lifeboat Club are among the organisations to have benefitted from Communities Chest funding in recent months. The funding helped Bonymaen RFC send some of their coaches on Welsh Rugby Union courses to improve their skills, with Mumbles Lifeguard Club using the money to buy equipment to help with the training of young lifeguards.

Nia Parry, from Swansea Council's sport and health team, said: "Plenty of organisations and sports clubs throughout Swansea have benefitted from Communities Chest funding over the years, so it's great news that many thousands of pounds are again now available.

"Helping encourage more people to get active more often, this funding can boost sports clubs and community organisations by covering the costs of new equipment and the development of coaches, for example, which often leads to a higher profile, an improved experience for existing members and a better chance of attracting new members.

"I'd encourage all sports clubs and community organisations to apply if they think they could benefit from the funding. This funding is among the ways we're looking to increase the take-up of sport and physical activity in Swansea, which in turn boosts people's health, well-being and self-esteem."

Swansea Gymnastics Centre has also recently benefitted from Communities Chest funding, which covered the costs of specialist coaching. Communities Chest funding also enabled the Talking Hands Children and Young People's Service to buy play equipment, which is helping deaf and hard of hearing children in Swansea take part in sport and physical activity.

Communities Chest applications can be made online in the funding and support section of the Sport Wales website. Anyone who needs further information or help in filling out an application is asked to contact Nia Parry at Swansea Council on or 01792 635452.
