A career in archives

Advertised each year, the post of Archive Trainee gives a year's valuable experience of the archive profession.

Archives and Records Association

Every year, there is a post at the West Glamorgan Archive Service for those wishing to gain experience of working in archives before undertaking a postgraduate degree in Archives Administration. Candidates should be graduates, with a firm commitment to pursuing a career in archives.

Duties include working with the public in the Archive Searchroom and Family History Centre, listing archives, answering written enquiries and working with the Records Management Service. This will provide a good overview of work in archives. In addition, visits to other local record offices and an informal training programme provide a solid basis for an application for postgraduate training.

The post is for one year, beginning in September. It is usually advertised in June on the City and County of Swansea website.

The Archives and Records Association (ARA) websiteOpens new window contains useful information about the profession.
