Teachers and pupils praised in inspection report

The standard of teaching, pupil attainment and the behaviour of youngsters at a primary school in Swansea have all been praised by inspectors.

They have also highlighted the strong leadership at Pen y Fro Primary and said this means it is well placed to build on a strong track record of improvement.

Overall they rated the school in Priors Crescent in Dunvant as good following an inspection earlier this year.

They said many pupils make strong progress as they move through the school, including those with additional learning needs.

At the end of Key Stage 2 many have good speaking and listening skills, older pupils have good reading skills and most develop effective numeracy skills.

The report states: "Nearly all pupils are enthusiastic about school and are keen to learn.

"They co-operate well in lessons and their standard of behaviour is consistently good."

The inspectors said many pupils in the school are given responsible roles which they undertake conscientiously, including the ambassadors for children's rights and members of the school council.

The report added: "There are comprehensive procedures in place to support good behaviour and anti-bullying strategies. As a result many older pupils act maturely around the school and are effective role models for younger children."

All teachers were found to have strong and effective relationships with nearly all the pupils and plan an interesting range of activities and lessons.

The report said: "The headteacher and senior leadership team have a clear vision for the school that gives a high priority to ensuring that all pupils achieve well and enjoy learning."

Chair of Governors, Mrs Alison Hobbs, said: "We are very pleased that this positive inspection report reflects well on the school, all staff and pupils."

Headteacher, Mrs Rachel Lewis, added: "We are particularly grateful to parents, carers and the wider community for their ongoing support in helping us to achieve this.

"As well as rating the school's current performance as good the inspectors found our prospects for improvement are also good and we will continue to work hard to build on our success to date."
