Market event to cater for fast-growing lifestyle movement

Catering for one of Britain's fastest growing lifestyle movements, an event is being held at Swansea Market later this month.

Swansea Market

The Swansea Vegfest team will be holding a pop-up event at the market on Saturday May 20 from 10am to 4pm with information and advice on living a vegan lifestyle.

People who live a vegan lifestyle consume no food that comes from animals, including meat, eggs and dairy products.

In a survey carried out last year, it was found 542,000 people across the UK have adopted a plant-based diet, which was up from 150,000 people in 2006.

Held in celebration of National Vegetarian Week and the national Love Your Local Market campaign, Swansea Vegfest will showcase a variety of local businesses, who will be on hand with tasty treats, cosmetics, arts and a kids' corner to keep children entertained.

Famous vegans across the world include Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, singer Bryan Adams and actor Casey Affleck, who won Best Actor at the 2017 Oscars in February.

As part of the Love your Local Market campaign promoted by the National Association of British Market Authorities, over 1,200 markets across the UK will be hosting events to attract new customers and traders.

Sarah Lawton, City Centre Operations and Project Officer at Swansea Council, said: "Each year, the Love Your Local Market campaign has a different theme, with the theme for 2017 all about making markets relevant for a new generation of market shoppers and traders.

"The key to the sustainability of any market is to ensure its products and services meet the needs of modern consumers and reflect current trends, which is why we're promoting veganism this year.

"Statistics show there are now far more vegans across the country - especially in the 15 to 34 age bracket - so this event will complement a new vegan lifestyle stall at the market called Brontosaurus that's been very successful since opening.

"This is an example of the market keeping up with the times, while continuing to promote and celebrate its proud heritage."

Swansea Market is also offering free trading pitches at the centre of the market from Wednesday May 17 to Sunday May 21 to encourage new traders and give entrepreneurs the chance to test their business ideas.
