Swansea event to showcase electric car technology

Showcasing electric car technology, a major event is being planned for Swansea city centre later this month.

Clean Air Roadshow

BMW, Mitsubishi and Tesla will be among the exhibitors taking part in the Clean Air Roadshow, being held in Castle Square on Saturday April 22 from 10am to 4pm.

Swansea Council is organising the event.

Electric cars from Gravells Kia, Renault, Toyota, Sinclair, My Big Green Fleet and Riversimple will also feature at the event. Swansea Council, Swansea University, Sustrans, Ecotricity, Electric Nation, Gower Power and Low Carbon Swansea Bay will be on hand with trade stands.

Other features of the event will include displays from electric car charge point companies, a Sinclair C5 from the 1980s and live shows from a giant robot called Titan.

Martin Nicholls, Director of Place at Swansea Council, said: "This event will enable people to find out more about electric car technology with the many exhibitors that will be present on the day. Exhibitors will also be able to arrange test drives for interested parties at a mutually convenient time in future.

"Technology like this will help the council in its aim to reach the Welsh Government target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This is why we already have a number of electric cars in our fleet and are continuing to explore the introduction of electric car charging points across the city to make this technology viable for local people.

"Investing in renewable energy technology is one a number of ways we're looking to become more energy efficient, which will help cut costs, reduce our carbon footprint and protect services for residents across Swansea."

Information and videos will feature on Castle Square's big screen throughout the event, which is being supported by Swansea University. Officers from Swansea Council's air pollution team will also be on hand with information and advice.

It's estimated about 80,000 plug-in electric vehicles are now registered in the UK, with government subsidies available to prospective buyers.
