Cycle hire and parking survey launched in Swansea

Swansea Council is calling on cyclists to get in touch via a new survey and tell the council where they want to see new safe parking and storage facilities.

The plans are part of the Council's wider plans to create better cycling infrastructure throughout the city and will be funded through the Welsh Government's Active Travel Fund.

Two secure bike storage hubs have previously been created at Fabian Way Park & Ride and at the Quadrant Bus Station - both of which feature safe and secure bike storage and bike repair stations.

Now the Council wants to look at where the public would like to see further similar facilities throughout the city.

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: "We have already created safe and secure cycle storage facilities at key public transport hubs in the city including our main bus station and the Fabian Way Park and Ride site. These give the public the opportunity to use cycling for part or all of their commute to Swansea.

"Our aim is to also create better bike parking facilities in communities throughout the city and we want the public to tell us which places would be ideal for them."

Along with creating new parking options, the Council is also asking the public for their views on the future development of cycle hire for Swansea.

At present, Swansea University operates the Santander cycle hire scheme, which gives the public the chance to hire bikes along a set route between Mumbles and Swansea University Bay Campus.

The Council is aiming to develop a new business case for a wider cycle hire scheme which would potentially link between the city centre and local communities.

Cllr Stevens added: "The Council, with support from the WG Active Travel Fund, has developed a wide range of cycling and walking routes across the city. We want as many people as possible using these routes.

"The development of a wider cycle hire scheme will help give the public - that don't own a bike, the chance to use these routes as a way of getting around the city."
