Charities, community groups and other organisations that are tackling food poverty and food insecurity can now apply for a share of the £41,400 Welsh Government funded Direct Food Support Fund that has a focus on activities that help to address the root causes of food poverty.

Capital grants could be used to fund items such as fridges and freezers or secure additional storage.

Revenue funding could be used to buy good quality food and essential goods as well as overhead costs and volunteer expenses. It could also fund the development of community hubs, social supermarkets, community cafes, lunch clubs, community cookery classes and outreach work.

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Alyson Pugh, said: "With rising fuel bills, rocketing food prices and increased mortgage and rent costs many more people than ever before are facing genuine hardship.

"Thankfully in Swansea we have some wonderful charities, groups and organisations who work flat out to help ensure people have food on the table.

"I know their services are facing demand like never before so I am very grateful to our colleagues in Welsh Government for finding the funding for these grants.

"Swansea Council is doing all it can to support all our residents during this unprecedented cost of living crisis.

"I would urge groups that may be eligible to a share of this funding to apply and if they are unsure or have any questions they are more than welcome to contact our team in Tackling Poverty who will help and talk them through the process."

A high volume of applications are expected for these grants so it is suggested applications are for up to £1,100.  Each application will be assessed on its merits.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, 18th November 2022.
