YGG Lon Las project update (school accommodation)

Information regarding temporary school accommodation during the new build.

February 2016

January 2016

Pupils and staff will shortly be moving to their temporary home on the site of Ysgol Gymraeg Y Cwm. In order to facilitate the move there will be school closure days on 18 January 2016 and 19 January 2016 with pupils arriving at their temporary home on 20 January 2016.

Temporary school facilities

The temporary school will provide pupils and staff with a safe and fit for purpose environment to be educated in whilst the new school is being built.

There have been slight modifications to the former Cwm infant building. This will be the main entrance to the school should you wish to visit the headteacher or speak to the school administration team. Breakfast club, after school club and school lunch will take place within this part of the school. This area of the school premises will also accommodate nursery, reception and year 1 classrooms. There will be ample toilet facilities in the temporary school to suit all ages.

Transport arrangements

The council's home to school transport policy allows free transport for pupils who live two miles or more from their catchment school, measured using the shortest available walking route.

In terms of the pupils temporarily moving to Ysgol Gymraeg Y Cwm, those living in Tregof Village, Parc Brynheulog, Birchgrove, parts of Peniel Green, parts of Trallwn and in the school's catchment area in Cwmrhydyceirw and Morriston are to receive free transport. This is because they live two miles or more from the school. The pupils who live in Port Tennant, Danygraig and St Thomas who currently receive free transport on contract 829 to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Lon Las are to continue to receive free transport.

If your child lives less than two miles from Y Cwm, unfortunately free transport is not being provided. It is therefore your responsibility to ensure that your child gets to and from school. You may be able to purchase a spare seat on a contract bus, though you would be responsible for taking your child to and from the nearest pick up and set down point to your home.

The cost for a spare seat is £135.00 for the spring term, £145.00 for the summer term and currently £410.00 for the academic year. Unfortunately it is not possible to purchase a seat for a nursery age pupil attending for half a day only.

Five contract buses are being provided. These are:

  • 824 - Cwmrhydyceirw and Morriston
  • 825 - Tregof Village
  • 826 - Parc Brynheulog
  • 827 - Birchgrove, Lonlas and Peniel Green
  • 827 - Peniel Green and Trallwn

These are being operated in line with the normal school starting and finishing times. Unfortunately we are unable to cater for breakfast club and after school club.

A passenger assistant is being provided on each contract bus to supervise the children. Each bus is fitted with seatbelts. Please would you impress upon your child the need to wear a seatbelt throughout the journey. The contract buses will stop near the school on Jersey Road and your child will be escorted between the bus and the school premises, and vice versa.

The council will be allocating the children with eligibility for free transport to the contract buses. You will be notified of the route and times of the buses nearer the start date for the new school arrangements.

As part of the temporary modifications at Mansel Street, there will be a dedicated pick up and drop off point for parents which will accommodate up to 38 vehicles including designated parking bays for disabled visitors.

Breakfast club

The school's breakfast club will run as normal from the temporary site. The times remain the same and are as follows:

  • Starts at 7.45am
  • Doors close at 8.30am
  • Breakfast club finishes at 8.40am

After school club

The school's after school provision will run as normal from the temporary site. The times remain the same and are as follows:

  • 3.30pm - 6.00pm

The school is currently planning alternative arrangements in order to ensure that the high standards of physical education lessons are maintained. A wide range of activities will be organised - some on site and some using local facilities.
