Apply and pay for a copy birth certificate online

You can use this form to request a copy of a birth certificate.

This form is available in Welsh - click on 'Cymraeg' in the top right corner of your screen.

Requests for certificates are processed within 15 working days after you apply. The fee is £12.50 per certificate. We can send it to you by second class post. For our priority service we will get the certificate ready within 24 hours . The fee is £38.50 per certificate. We can send it to you by first class post or we can let you know when it is ready for you to collect.

For a copy birth certificate you must tell us:

the name of the person at the time of birth
the date and place of birth
the name of at least one parent.

2. Records of adoptions in England and Wales are held by the Registrar General. These relate to persons who have been adopted since 1 January 1927 under the Adoption Acts.
  
  A standard certificate is a full copy of the entry in the Adopted Children Register which, instead of particulars of parentage and birth registration, gives the date of birth (if known) and particulars of the adoption and adoptive parents.
  
  A short certificate shows only the name and bears no reference to adoption.
  
  Applications for adoption certificates should be made in writing to General Register Office, PO Box 2, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2JD.

    Standard certificates - This is a full copy of the birth entry and includes particulars of parentage and registration.
    
    Most organisations will want to see a standard birth certificate and will not accept the short version. There is no difference in price between a standard and short birth certificate.
    
    Short certificate - A short certificate shows only the name and surname, sex, date of birth and district of birth.
