ALN - Professionals who can help
There are a number of different professionals who are available to support learners on their learning journey.
Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo)
All mainstream maintained schools in Wales must designate a person who will have responsibility for co-ordinating support for children / young people with additional learning needs. That person is known as the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator or ALNCo.
Early Years Additional Learning Needs Lead Officer (EY ALNLO)
Supports children under 5.
Behaviour Support Team
The Behaviour Support Team offers advice to schools / colleges across Swansea working with children / young people with behavioural, emotional or social difficulties.
Physical and Complex Needs Team
The Physical and Complex Needs Team provides support for children / young people and their families, schools / colleges.
Sensory Needs Team
The Sensory Needs Team is there to support children / young people who have an additional need.
Complex Learning Difficulties Team
The Complex Learning Difficulties Team offers advice and guidance to primary and secondary schools across Swansea for children / young people aged 3-19 years with complex learning needs.
Speech, Language Communication Needs Team (SLCT)
The Speech, Language and Communication Team (SLCT) provide support to children and young people and offer advice and guidance to primary and secondary schools across Swansea.
Designated Co-ordinator (DESCo)
When making a decision whether a child or young person has ALN, the DESCo is the name person in the council who is responsible for co-ordinating what happens when the local authority are responsible for the IDP.
ALN Caseworkers
The ALN Caseworker team provides advice to help parents and children / young people on their journey. They can offer advice and support about education matters for ALN children / young people.
Education Psychology Team
Educational Psychologists support children / young people in a number of ways, they can offer advice and support, carry out observations and assessments.
Social Communication Needs Champion
The SCNC is a member of school staff who has had specialist training to offer advice and support to staff who support children / young people in their schools.
Designated Education Clinical Lead Officer (DECLO)
The DECLO has responsibility for co-ordinating the health board's functions in relation to children and young people who have additional learning needs.
