Current active travel projects

These projects have been allocated grant funding from the active travel fund to be developed or delivered.

Our schemes are split into two categories:

  1. Main schemes - these schemes have received funding and will be constructed this year, subject to approval.
  2. Schemes in development - these are proposed schemes which are at an earlier stage of feasibility studies, design and engagement with stakeholders.

Depending on its complexity or size, a scheme may be in development for several years before it is at a stage where we are ready to bid for 'main' funding to construct the new route.

'Main' schemes being delivered

Walter Road and Sketty Road - Phase 1

Walter Road and Sketty Road is a main route that connects the communities of Sketty and Uplands to the city centre and beyond. We will construct a 2-kilometre-long dedicated cycle lane along the southern side of the road. Cyclists will be able to continue to the city centre via Page Street.

The below PDF files contain more information about the draft proposals for each section of the route, including maps and plans of how the proposed road layout might look.

The route is divided into three sections.

Please note these are large file sizes - consider downloading them when connected to wifi, rather than viewing directly online.

Members of the public, residents and businesses were invited to comment on the outline proposals during a consultation period of 9 January - 4 February 2024.

Comments and feedback received from this consultation have helped to inform and refine the design of the route. The scheme will be delivered over three financial years. Subject to receiving approval, we hope to start construction works late summer 2024 of phase 1, which is the section on Walter Road from Page St to St James' Crescent. Phases 2 and 3 through Uplands and towards Sketty will be constructed in subsequent years.

Schemes in development for future years

Clyne Common

This new shared-use path will travel on the southern side of the B4436 over Clyne Common, between Mayals and Bishopston. It is approximately 2.5km long and will be 3m wide. It will provide an off-road route linking from Bishopston Comprehensive School to the recently constructed Mayals route, enabling people living in the Bishopston and Murton areas to have access to the wider active travel network to Mumbles, Swansea and beyond via National Cycle Route 4.

Pontarddulais Connect

This scheme consists of a number of interventions being delivered over several years, and will connect the town of Pontarddulais with the existing active travel network, and facilitate journeys to and from Carmarthenshire, which borders Pontarddulais.

Routes will connect key residential areas of Pontarddulais with schools, Pontarddulais train station, leisure facilities, retail outlets and south via the new active travel corridor joining to the rest of Swansea's network.

This year a 350m section of shared use path will be constructed between Bolgoed Road to Bryniago Road, subject to receiving appropriate permissions.

Penllergaer to Tircoed

The community of Tircoed is currently isolated due to the severance caused by the M4 motorway, restricting access to employment centres and retail facilities located to the south. To offer wider connectivity and expand opportunities for active travel journeys, this scheme proposes to introduce a new link connecting to the Penllergaer to Fforestfach route. This new link will also improve active travel connections east and west by linking to the shared use path on the A48 and towards Gorseinon.

Loughor to Gowerton

A new 3m wide shared pedestrian and cycle path is proposed to connect Gowerton to Loughor for pedestrians and cyclists, approximately 2km in length, to enhance connectivity between the two communities which experience severance caused by the A484. The route will provide access to the Elba Leisure Centre, Gowerton Medical Centre, a Tesco Express, two churches and a Caravan and Motorhome Club campsite.

This scheme will be delivered across two phases. Phase one will comprise the southern section of the route from Gowerton. It will commence from Ffordd Beck (at the entrance to the Elba Sports Complex) and will pass the playing fields and join Pon Y Cob Road, where it will continue to Island Bridge. Phase two will include the replacement of the existing one-lane Island Bridge and continue along Culfor Road and connect to Loughor.

Penclawdd to Gowerton

This scheme seeks to complete a missing link in active travel provision between the communities of Penclawdd and Gowerton along the B4295, where pedestrians currently must use a narrow footway, whilst cyclists must re-join a carriageway. This scheme will enhance active travel options for Penclawdd residents, providing connectivity to Gowerton and offering wider access to the active travel network via National Cycle Network Route 4. Once completed, the scheme will also enable greater access to Gower.

Newton to Mumbles

This scheme aims to improve walking and cycling provision for people living in and visiting Mumbles, by delivering a route which connects the area of Newton through Mumbles to the seafront, via Underhill Park. The scheme will provide improved access to shops and Oystermouth Primary School.

Eaton Road improvements

This scheme is required to improve active travel infrastructure on the Eaton Road / B4489 Llangyfelach Road transport corridor. It will aim to provide a high-quality connection between the previously improved shared-use paths on Cwm Road and Penfilia Terrace. Eaton Road is located within the Brynhyfryd area of Swansea, approximately 2km from the city centre, which is comprised predominantly of dense terraced housing.

Clasemont Road

This scheme is 1.9km in length and will improve connectivity between the main DVLA building and the centre of Morriston, via the Clasemont Road / Pentrepoeth (A48) transport corridor.

At the DVLA building (from Long View Road) the scheme will link to an existing shared-use path on Clasemont Road which was delivered during 2021-22. Whilst in Morriston, the route will directly connect to an existing traffic-free shared-use path.

The scheme will improve strategic east and west connectivity between the communities of Llangyfelach and Morriston. It will also serve the DVLA, a key trip generator in the area.

Tawe Riverside Corridor

This scheme proposes to construct a 3-4m shared use path along the western bank of the River Tawe, from the existing path near Coles Close to the Hafod Copperworks, via the existing infrastructure at the True Student development. This scheme will introduce a 1.4km of new shared pedestrian and cycle path to address gaps in the existing provision. The scheme would connect the large commercial area around the Swansea.com Stadium and Morfa retail park with the city centre.
