School pupils help inspire classmates to enjoy sport

More than 100 Swansea school pupils have been trained to encourage classmates to get active - and improve their health.

They were mentored by Swansea Council sport and health officers and now have the title young ambassador for sport in their schools.

The scheme has been run by the council for more than a decade and inspires young people aged nine to 14.

Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: "Young ambassadors are key to ensuring that pupils have a voice in sport. They improve and develop movement skills, ability levels, confidence and enjoyment of sports activities for other young people."

William Evans, of year six young ambassador at Sketty Primary School, said: "I've enjoyed setting up and delivering sessions to my classmates."

William and fellow young ambassador Bella Difrancesco are among those who have attended council-managed training sessions to inspire future young ambassadors.

Funders for the Swansea scheme include Sport Wales. Partners include Swansea University students, Sport Wales and the Youth Sports Trust.
