Seasonal workers affected by Universal Credit changes

Advice for people in temporary employment over the Christmas period.

Are you in temporary employment over the Christmas period?

If you are, when your employment ends you would usually claim Jobseekers Allowance. From 13 December 2017, this benefit has been abolished and you will be directed to make a claim for Universal Credit.

Universal Credit is the new means tested benefit for people of working age and has replaced Income Support, Income Based Jobseekers Allowance, Income Related Employment & Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit.

If your temporary employment is due to end after Christmas or at the beginning of the New Year, you should seek advice on when is the best time to make a claim for Universal Credit.

This is a complex area and you need to seek independent advice e.g. Citizen's Advice.

If you need help with your claim between Christmas and New Year visit the Civic Centre or the libraries listed below.

There are free PCs in each location which you can use, and there will be staff available for help to get online.
