A Welsh-medium primary that moved into a brand new £9.9m home three years ago is a happy and welcoming school and the headteacher and staff provide rich and memorable learning experiences for pupils, inspectors from Estyn have found.

Earlier this year inspectors visited Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tan-y-Ian and have now published their report.

They said Tan-y-lan is a core part of the local community where a strong emphasis is placed on the importance of speaking Welsh and taking pride in Welsh culture.

The report states: "It is an inclusive and caring community that promotes strong values such as courtesy, respect and good behaviour successfully.

"There is an affectionate and warm relationship between the staff and pupils and all are encouraged to do their best in every aspect of their work.

"Staff identify pupils' needs, including those with additional learning needs (ALN) well, and meet them successfully. As a result, most pupils make sound progress from their starting points in all aspects of their learning.

"Pupils' well-being and attitudes to learning are a clear strength within the school. The curriculum is contemporary and provides a wide and exciting range of beneficial and stimulating experiences for all pupils."

The report adds that headteacher Berian Jones and the other leaders have a clear vision for the school, which is based on the importance of working together as a community to create a happy, safe and supportive learning environment for pupils.

Mr Jones said: "Everyone associated with our school should be very proud of this inspection report and I'd like to thank all our staff, our pupils and their families, our governors and the wider community for their support.

"I'm particularly proud that Estyn recognised the wonderful relationships within the school and the care and respect we show for each other. We have been asked to prepare a case study on how we work to achieve this and this will be shared with schools across Wales."

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Robert Smith, said: "I would like to congratulate all associated with Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tan-y-Ian on a very positive report and thank them for their continued hard work."
