Forty-eight groups and charities across the city have successfully applied for almost £150,000 in food grants as part of the council's support for families while children are off school.

Other initiatives include free bus travel for all within Swansea every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday starting on June 26 and running until August 26, as well as hundreds of free and subsidised activities during the summer thanks to the council's COAST initiative funded by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund.

This is the second year the council has offered funding to a large variety of groups and charities to provide school summer holiday food and it is being used in different ways with some providing food packs, others prepared meals and some food vouchers.

Families said it made a huge difference with one stating: "By having this food pack, I've been able to spend a small amount of money to take my children on a local day out and buy them an ice cream using the money I would have spent on food this week."

Another said: "It not only gave me the funds to purchase essentials that I have stressed about getting, but also gave me that peace of mind that I was being helped in areas of dire need (money)."

Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Well-being Alyson Anthony said: "This year there is the largest package of support in Swansea to help families enjoy the school summer holidays.

"We know people are struggling with the cost of living at this time and that the school holidays can put added pressure on household budgets but we want all families to have the chance to enjoy the six week break.

"I'm proud that Swansea Council has been able to play its part in supporting families this summer and I'd like to thank all our partners for their hard work."
