The Rural Development Plan (RDP) 2007-2013

The RDP was a seven year European Union and Welsh Government-sponsored programme aimed at helping economic regeneration of rural communities.

This means that funding was made available on a series of themes which included:

  • Diversification of farming businesses
  • Encouragement of tourism activities
  • Improvement of basic services
  • Village and small town enhancement and renewal
  • Conservation and upgrading of rural heritage
  • Problem-solving in partnership through the 'leader' approach

Swansea was one of eighteen areas across Wales with wards designated as 'rural' in nature. The eight wards in Swansea were Bishopston, Fairwood, Gower, Llangyfelach, Pennard, Penclawdd, Pontarddulais and Mawr.

The Swansea RDP, facilitated by us, was responsible for overseeing the local action group 'Rural Swansea Action' that had been set up to deliver a new approach to rural development in Swansea.

Almost £5m was secured as part of two business plans for a range of projects to implement Swansea's rural development strategy.

Some of the funding was allocated to specific projects at application stage, and some was accessed through grant schemes.
