Welsh language drive sees school go for gold
Pupils at Penyrheol Primary are celebrating after their school earned a top award for encouraging pupils, staff and the wider community to speak Welsh more often.
Thanks to a lot of hard work at the school and support from partners including Swansea Council the school has been presented with the Gold Siarter Iaith Award.
It is a Welsh Government initiative to inspire children and young people to use Welsh in all aspects of their lives.
Penyrheol deputy headteacher Clare Lecrass said: "We are so proud! The Welsh language holds a special place in the hearts of all of us at Penyrheol.
"It belongs to all of us and it is a symbol of our heritage, history and sense of belonging. Siarad Cymraeg fosters a strong sense of community, cynefin and pride, contributing to the diversity and multiculturalism of Wales and our school."
Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said: "The council is supporting all our schools to increase the social use of Welsh by children and young people using Siarter Iaith as part of our Welsh in Education Strategic Plan so congratulations to all Penyrheol on achieving the gold award."
