Pupils join ceremony marking Holocaust Memorial Day
Pupils from schools in Swansea today joined civic leaders at a ceremony as the city marked Holocaust Memorial Day.
It is an international annual commemoration of those who have lost their lives in acts of genocide across the world with the theme for this year being 'The Fragility of Freedom'.
Schools taking part at the event at the Swansea.com Stadium included Olchfa, Pentrehafod, Bishop Vaughan and Bishop Gore comprehensives as well as St Joseph's Catholic School, Blaenymaes and Gwyrosydd primaries and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tan-y-lan.
They were joined Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart, The Lord Mayor of Swansea Graham Thomas and members of Swansea's faith communities.
Chief Inspector James Ratti of South Wales Police read the Pan Wales Pledge while Norma Glass, MBE, a leading light in Swansea's Jewish community, closed proceedings.
Cllr Stewart said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust and subsequent genocides which have cast a dark shadow on humanity.
"It is through events such as Holocaust Memorial Day we remember and challenge ourselves to stand-up against such tyranny to prevent it from taking hold again."
