Swansea Council has partnered with the charity Heartbeat Trust UK to install 300 easily accessible defibrillators covering all its wards as it aims to become the UK's first 'Defib-friendly' city.

More than 150 are now in place and in a few short months have been accessed more than 60 times.

The partners are now working together to ensure as many people as possible have the knowledge and skills to use them to help keep people alive until the emergency services arrive.

Free courses that take less than an hour will be held in communities across Swansea during the next year thanks to support from St John Ambulance Cymru.

They will also be offered to businesses and organisations including Swansea Council's councillors and staff.

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart said: "This equipment can easily mean the difference between life and death when someone suffers from a medical emergency such as a cardiac arrest.

"I'm proud that our council is working with Heartbeat Trust UK and supporting them financially to locate 300 defibrillators in all areas of Swansea."

The council's Joint Deputy-Leader Andrea Lewis added: "We are very keen to support the training that will be taking place during the next 12 months including here at the council.

"Heartbeat Trust UK is doing a fantastic job and I'm grateful to St John Ambulance Cymru for their support.

"I'd encourage residents to take the time and sign-up for these free courses when they are offered in their community. It really could help them save a life."

Henry Gilbert, Chair of Heartbeat Trust UK, said: "CPR training and the knowledge of how to use a defibrillator, are the two key skills we need to help save a life of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest.

"So our one hour awareness sessions are essential.  They are free and provided by our training partner St John Ambulance Cymru."
