Youngsters celebrate makeover for much-loved play area

The play area near the local DFS retail outlet is a haven for local families looking for a safe place for their children to play and catch up with friends.

The play area is one of more than 50 in neighbourhoods across the city to have benefited from Swansea Council's £7m play upgrade programme and has been officially opened.

The play area boasts swings, a roundabout and a multiplay unit for young ones to enjoy.

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: "It's great news that children living in Nixon Terrace and the surrounding area have their own happy space to enjoy free family time together. The feedback we've had has been very positive.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said that the upgrade programme which aims to see every council-owned play area improved is the biggest of its kind in Wales.

He said: "We want to support as many play opportunities as possible in local communities so no child is too far from a play area they love."

Since the start of the play areas programme communities across Swansea have seen investment in areas including Mayhill, West Cross, Garnswllt, Bonymaen, Mawr, Grovesend, Penclawdd and Birchgrove.
