Support if you think your child may have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder
New guidance on the help available to parents or carers who think their child or young person may have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder is now available in Swansea.
No matter what age, support is available at school, at home and in the community and children do not need to have an assessment or diagnosis to access this.
A new section has been created on the council's website detailing help, frequently asked questions, top tips and links to different organisations that can guide you.
This can be found in English at www.swansea.gov.uk/autismsupport and in Welsh at www.abertawe.gov.uk/cymorthawtistiaeth.
To accompany this a short video has been produced to help spread the word to parents and carers.
Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said: "If people think their child or young person may have ASD or other neurodiversity needs, or are waiting for an assessment, we know this can be an uncertain time.
"Parents and carers do not need to navigate this journey on their own and if they need support, advice or information about organisations or support groups then we have created a new section of our website to help.
"There are many organisations in the community that can help families feel informed and more connected.
"They can join a local support group, on social media and in person, where they can meet other families in a similar situation and talk freely about their experiences.
"But there's not just support available for parents and carers. There are projects and activities that are tailored to children and young people who have or may have autism, which provide them with essential opportunities for social interaction and personal development.
"These include groups that offer play and recreation, sport and music sessions, fun days out, and access to playschemes and clubs.
"I would urge families in this position to visit the website and familiarise themselves with what is on hand so that they can access the help and advice that is available."
