The Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator

Each school has a designated Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALNCo) who plays a key role in Additional Learning Needs (ALN) policy and provision. Find out how the ALNCo advises and supports other members of staff.

The school's designated Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator, working closely with fellow school staff, has an important role in the day-to-day operation of the school's policy on meeting additional learning needs and in overseeing the provision to meet additional learning needs.

A school's Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator should be responsible for:

  • The day-to-day oversight of the school's Additional Learning Needs policy and liaising with and advising fellow school staff.
  • Co-ordinating the Additional Learning Needs provision.
  • Maintaining the school's Additional Learning Needs register and overseeing the records of pupils receiving Additional Learning Needs provision.
  • Overseeing the liaison with parents of pupils with Additional Learning Needs.
  • Contributing to the professional development of fellow school staff on appropriate areas of Additional Learning Needs provision.
  • Liaising with appropriate external support services.
