2011 Census release timetable

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published the first results from the 2011 Census on 16 July 2012. Further details on the content and timetable for each of the census output releases has been made available through a census outputs prospectus originally launched by ONS in March 2012.

The prospectus aims to keep users up-to-date with plans for the release of 2011 Census data. It describes the census statistics that will be released, and lays out when ONS intends to publish them. Due to the vast scale of data collected, the 2011 Census statistics are being released in stages. The overall release schedule is summarised below.

First release: July 2012 - November 2012

The first release tables published on 16 July included the following elements:

  • usually resident census population estimates (rounded) at local authority and regional level within England and Wales, in five year age bands and by sex
  • estimates of occupied households (rounded) at country, region and local authority level within England and Wales
  • a range of additional information used by ONS to quality assure the 2011 Census results for local authorities, including the different components of the estimation process.

Within this release phase, ONS has since published further information from the 2011 Census:

  • 24 September 2012: Unrounded Census population estimates by single year of age and sex
  • 22 October 2012: Number of people with second addresses in local authorities in England and Wales - by age, sex, and type of second address
  • 23 November 2012: Population and Household Estimates for Wards and Output Areas - including population by five year age bands and sex; population in households/communal establishments; area/population density; occupied households/average household size.
