Welsh Moor and Forest Common

These commons are a mosaic of damp acid grassland and drier heath. They are generally very quiet commons, off the beaten track, secluded by scrub and trees.

Welsh Moor is owned and managed by the National Trust where bracken management has recently taken place on the site to encourage a greater diversity of heathland plant species to re-establish. This will have a greater value for wildlife and also provide better grazing opportunities for commoners' livestock such as the sheep and cattle that graze this area.

Commoners are usually local landowners and farmers that have historical rights to use the land for grazing, collecting firewood and so on.

Highlights

Marsh fritillary butterfly (internationally rare) is a feature of the site.
