Pengwern Common and Fairwood Common

Pengwern and Fairwood are two large areas of adjacent common land (total of 157 hectares and 462 hectares respectively) consisting of wet heathy grassland, marshy grassland with bracken and scrub on the higher ground.

Fairwood Common surrounds Swansea Airport. Pengwern Common is crossed by a tree-lined stream. The B4271 dissects the site and the A4118 also crosses Fairwood Common. Priors Wood and Meadow, a The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (opens new window) managed site is adjacent to the northern boundary of Fairwood Common.

Fairwood itself has much wildlife interest including species such as tormentil, lousewort and ragged-robin, badger, frog, snipe, skylark, meadow pipit mistlethrush, yellow hammer and linnet.

  • West Gower landscape which is included in the Register of Landscapes or Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales (CCW/CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments/ICOMOS UK 1998, 53-56)

Footpaths

Both areas of common are open access land. Footpaths cross both commons - see OS Explorer Map.

Car

There is no on-site parking.

Buses

There is a bus stop on the B4271 by the minor road leading to Lunnon. Buses regularly use both main roads that cross the commons and most will stop on request.
