In order to share proposals for the new development in Mayhill a public engagement period was held 21 March-18 April 2014, during this time 4200 residents received information regarding the new facilities and an open day was held in Mayhill Community Centre on 2 April 2014.

City & County of Swansea received 28 responses during the engagement period.

There were a number of frequently asked questions during the engagement period - our responses to these questions

The new centre will replace the current surgery on Pen y Graig Road and the Family Centre on Mayhill Road, with a new, modern building for both the GP Surgery and the Family Centre.

Why do we need to replace these buildings?

The GPs of Mayhill Surgery are currently working from a building that was originally built in 1929. The building is now too small and out of date to meet the medical needs of the community in the 21st Century. We therefore would like to build a new surgery which has been specifically designed to provide for your local healthcare needs.

The Family Centre on Mayhill Road is also too small to meet the growing demand for the services we need to develop in order to provide the best possible support for families in the Mayhill and Townhill areas of Swansea.

What are we planning to do?

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Health Board (ABMU) and Swansea Council, with the support of Welsh Government, are teaming up to give the community a new, modern, purpose built GP Surgery and Family Centre in one building.

Where will the building be located?

We have looked at a number of possible sites and as a result, our proposal is to breathe new life into the areas of open space, using part of the area known locally as Mayhill Park. The site has been carefully chosen for its location, size and accessibility. It is easy to find, and is on a main road with a bus stop close to the site. By building the new centre here, it gives us the chance to make the site a real asset to the local community and less likely to attract anti-social behaviour and flytipping.

It is also large enough to accommodate the building and provide outdoor play space, as well as car parking for patients, users of the Family Centre and staff. Dedicated disabled parking spaces will also be provided with a level access into the building for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs and prams.

What services will be available in the new centre?

Services offered by GPs have changed significantly in the past 30 years and we want Mayhill's patients to benefit from those developments too.  The new building will enable the GPs to offer a greater range of services like specific clinics to treat long term conditions such as Diabetes, Heart Disease, Asthma and Chronic Pulmonary Disease.  We want to provide you with as many services as possible close to your home to save you travelling to the hospital.  With more space available, we can work to provide services delivered by other healthcare specialists such as Heart Failure Clinics or Screening Services.

With more space, the Family Centre will be able to develop its service to become a 'one stop shop', meaning it will be able to provide you and your family with more help, support and services in one place.  The improved conditions and space will include a large children's room for parent and toddler sessions, baby massage and holiday and afterschool provision.  It will also provide opportunities for further training, family support and advice sessions in comfortable surroundings as well as re-homing the recently opened toy library and pre-loved clothing boutique.

New kitchen facilities will be the home of cookery classes for young people, parents and carers.  The secure outdoor space will provide a place for children to grow and plant vegetables, run, play, laugh and learn.

Will I have to change my Doctor?

No, if you are a patient currently registered with the GPs at Mayhill Surgery then you will remain registered with them when they move to the new Surgery.

If I am not already a patient can I register with the Practice?

If you live in the area and would like to register as a patient, then you are able to visit the practice and discuss how to register with them.

Will there be a Pharmacy in the new Centre?

Yes, we are planning for a pharmacy to be included in the new Centre.

What will the new building look like?

The plan is to build the new Centre so that it will be visible from the road and easy to find.  The building will be designed to ensure it is safe and easily accessible for all who use it and at the same time to take advantage of the level site and the views.  It will also be designed so that it minimises the impact on the properties that are close to the site.

When will the new Centre open?

Everyone involved is working very hard to try and have the Centre completed by early Summer 2015.
