Swansea Waterfront link on track

The project is the redevelopment of Princess Way to make it more welcoming to pedestrians and shoppers who will be able to stroll along a newly created walkway between Castle Square in the city centre and the waterfront area.

Work is progressing well and the main construction work is scheduled for completion in winter 2005.

Much of the paving on St. Mary's Street and around the bus stops has been completed.

The new road alignment has been marked out with paving on the main stretch of pedestrian walkway, following extensive upgrading of services in the ground.

The development will be enhanced by two public artworks commissioned by the Council.

The two dramatic pieces are based on the notions of beacons, wayfaring and navigation. Councillors have already backed plans for a striking sculpture consisting of five vertical steel columns, the highest being 8 metres.

These will be placed next to the junction of York Street and Princess Way in the city centre and arranged in a w-shaped configuration based on the celestial constellation Cassiopeia.

Constructed of robust stainless steel metal pipe they will be perforated with LEDs, illuminating imagery connected to the theme of sea, stars, mapping and weather.

The project is funded with money from Objective One and the Assembly's Local Regeneration Fund.
