Glynn Vivian Art Gallery Redevelopment Project

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery has been planning a major redevelopment project for some years to help conserve the infrastructure of the original 1911 building and to improve access for all.

The project is being funded by a grant from the Welsh Government (£3.5m) in addition to contributions from the Arts Council of Wales (£2m) and the City and County of Swansea (£500K).

This exciting project is extensive and means that the Gallery will be closed to the public for the duration.

Structural work has now begun and the gallery is expected to reopen in autumn 2014. Glynn Vivian Offsite programme will provide activities and events in the interim.

The redeveloped Gallery will offer:

• Conservation of the 1911 Grade II* Listed building
• A new entrance and shop at street level
• Re-design of the 1974 gallery extension and a new glazed link structure
• A new passenger lift to allow full physical access to all exhibitions and collection galleries and all education and study facilities as well as other areas
• More space for the display of collections and exhibitions
• A new storage and conservation area to enable the future development of the collections
• Renewal of the existing education room and improved facilities for working with schools, colleges and our participants
• A new lecture space and community room
• A dedicated library and archive devoted to visitor research
• A new social space with refreshments and Wi-Fi access
• New technical areas and administrative offices

The Gallery continues to present an exciting offsite public programme of exhibitions, working with partners locally, nationally and internationally, and a full programme of activities and events are available at our offsite base at the YMCA, Kingsway, Swansea.

Our successful 4Site education programme continues to take place within schools and our team are preparing programmes for the Gallery reopening.
