We are pleased to announce that, thanks to a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government, free access to the 1911 census on www.findmypast.co.uk is available at the West Glamorgan Archives in the Civic Centre, Swansea, and at the Neath Antiquarian Society Archives in the Mechanics' Institute, Neath.

The 1911 Census contains many firsts for census reporting:

  1. It is the first census to show your ancestors actual handwriting and signature
  2. It reports more information about marriages, including how long a couple has been married, and how many children they've had.
  3. It shows you how many children from the marriage are alive, and how many have died.
  4. It also gives more information about occupations, including giving the industry the person's occupation is normally connected to.
  5. It's easier to search the census by address.
