Funding bid for safer communities

Swansea Council is hoping to secure around £600,000 of funding to develop safe walking and cycling routes in five communities across the city.

Cabinet Members approved a bid for a share of the Assembly's Transport Grant, which included a request for funding for Safe Routes in Communities schemes for Cwm Primary School, Craigfelen Primary School, Glais Primary School, Sketty Primary School and Dunvant Primary School.

The Safe Routes in Communities scheme builds on the success of the previous Safe Routes to School programme. While the focus will continue to be on schools, the scheme also aims to encourage the development of safe walking and cycling routes which provide links within communities to other facilities such as leisure centres, parks, hospitals or care centres for the elderly.

Swansea Council's Safer Routes in Communities Officer, Allison Gough said "Travel plans have been completed for Cwm Primary School, Dunvant Primary School, Craigfelen Primary School, Sketty Primary School and Glais Primary School.

"In future years it is intended to investigate funding opportunities to
develop schemes in the Community First areas of the city. "

Safer Routes in Communities Officer, Allison Gough explained more about what the Travel Plans would mean for the schools if the funding was secured.

"We would like to encourage as many children as possible to walk and where possible cycle to school, however we appreciate that there must be safer routes in order for them to do this.

"If the schools receive the funding, a variety of measures such as traffic calming, pelican/zebra crossings, new footways, cycle storage and lighting will be put in place for this to happen. All of these measures will not only benefit the children of the school, but also members of the wider community, making it safer for them to access local community facilities."
