Munich is a city of goldsmiths. Their reputation for innovation and dexterity spans centuries. For the past sixty years the Bavarian capital has organised Schmuck, a prestigious international jewellery exhibition. With its global perspective, this event attracts a wide audience that includes collectors, curators, artists and critics along with a broad spectrum of visitors. This year, Ralph Turner, was invited to be the selector of Schmuck 08.

The innovative makers contributing to Jewellery in Transition have all been selected from the Munich show, and produce jewellery that ranges from strident compositions commenting on the optimistic spirit of modernism, to references to conceptualism and surrealism with loud colourful narratives in contrast to the more subtle and sensitive minimalist modes.  The exhibition is curated by Ralph Turner.

Originated by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery
