Nationality Checking Service

image depicting Union Flag

Swansea Council is now offering a helping hand with the citizenship application process.

The Nationality Checking Service (NCS) is a basic advice service which aims to help those seeking citizenship complete the application process accurately. It will keep delays to a minimum and help its progress through the Immigration Service.

The service involves an applicant making an appointment to visit an NCS Advisor at the Register Office, in County Hall. A trained officer will ensure that the correct form is being used and will guide the applicant through the application, ensuring that it is correctly completed, signed and accompanied by the correct fee.

An identity check will be carried out and passports and any other valuable documents are copied and certified, enabling the applicant to retain the originals. The completed application is then submitted to the Home Office.

The aims of NCS are to:

  • Offer excellence in customer service, providing an accessible, face to face advice service.
  • Give peace of mind in the handling of valuable documents, applicants can, for example, retain their passports during the whole process.
  • Increase the proportion of applications, received by the Home Office, that can be decided with the minimum of delay.
  • Fewer applications rejected by the Home Office, therefore fewer applicants need to re-apply and pay again.
  • Offer a cohesive service for citizenship, from application, through processing to the ceremony.
  • Work in partnership with the OISC and Nationality Group of the Home Office.
  • Contribute to faster nationality processing times.
