Tesco Store Llansamlet

Tesco's retail-store at Llansamlet, Swansea has been modified to significantly reduce the impact that it has on the environment compared with other stores, and to be a test-bed for new technologies that could be introduced across Tesco's very large estates.

Increasing Energy Efficiency:

Energy-saving measures include methods of lighting, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.

During construction, a number of meters were fitted to monitor the use and production of energy in different areas of the store. Within three months of the store's opening in April, 2006, it was demonstrated that 36.4 per cent less energy had been used than at a previously built, but comparable, store at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Specific energy saving measures in the store include:

  • Well designed position, aspect and layout in order to optimise the use of natural light and air temperatures.
  • Installation of low – energy lighting combined with natural light and Passive Infrared (PIR) movement detectors.
  • Technologies such as 'T5 – lighting' (narrow diameter fluorescent tubes of high efficiency) installed to improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration units.
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems designed to make best use of opportunities for energy saving.
  • A gas-fired combined heat-and-power (CHP) plant was installed to produce 210 kW of electric and 340 kW of heat.
  • Three types (polycrystalline, monocrystalline and single-ply) of Photo-voltaic (PV) cells were included in a large array installed on the roof.

Tesco is analysing the impact of the various features of the design, structure and management of its energy-systems at Llansamlet and will incorporate those that are successful in their other stores as opportunities arise to do so.
