LC - Swansea's new Leisure Centre

image depicting New Leisure Centre Logo

HISTORY repeated itself in Swansea on Friday 7th March 2008 as the city turned out to welcome The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh to open the £32m LC leisure destination

It was in the summer of 1977 that The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh performed the official opening of the then Swansea Leisure Centre.

And they did it again when they came to open its landmark successor. The Royal Couple's tour of the building was part of a day of activities in Swansea that included a civic luncheon at the Brangwyn Hall and a visit to the St Thomas community in the east of the city.

Swansea Council has transformed the former leisure centre site into a 21st century water park with state-of-the-art health and fitness suites. The fantastic water park has indoor surfing facilities and a network of pools, slides and rides for all the family and is expected to attract up to one million visitors a year

Richard Proctor, Chief Executive of Bay Leisure, the not for profit organisation responsible for running the LC, said: "It is a proud day for Swansea, and for all the staff at the LC. After much hard work and effort from the team over the last few months, the LC is up and running and everyone involved is looking forward to ensuring that it proves to be a tremendous success".

"It's fitting that such a fantastic venue has received the Royal seal of approval, just as its predecessor did 31 years ago. I have no doubt that the people of Swansea will quickly take the LC to their hearts just as they did with the old Leisure Centre."

Andrew Nixon, director at Powell Dobson, architects of the LC, said: "We are proud to have helped Swansea regain its much loved flagship building. It has been an all encompassing project for us and we have been involved in an unprecedented hands-on team effort to assist the client and contractor to achieve an ambitious brief and programme".

"Fruits of all our labours are now clear wherever you look and there is every hope that the city will take to their building in the same way as we have enjoyed working on the project."
