Art Projects![]() A number of art projects took place to coincide with the building of the new school.
Over a period of twenty five years Cywaith Cymru has played a lead role in the field of public art. This has involved an ongoing dialogue with artists, clients and the public. During this time many major developments have taken place. The organisation evolved from the Welsh Sculpture Trust to become Cywaith Cymru. Artworks Wales, the national organisation for public art in Wales and the organisation's portfolio of work has diversified to reflect all areas of art practice in the public domain. This includes developing the Artist-in-Residence Programme to reflect current artists' ways of working. Cywaith Cymru continues to lead in the provision of a high quality programme of public art practice. This includes the development of public art strategies and the development of public art practice, including commissions, artist-in-residence and artist-led projects and a programme of experimental and temporary artworks. 2. Carolyn Davies, Arts Co-ordinator, City and County of Swansea Carolyn is Teacher Adviser and Co-ordinator for the Arts within the Education Department of the City and County of Swansea. Responsible for the development of the arts in schools, her role balances designing and delivering in-service training for teachers and learning assistants along with managing opportunities for large scale arts projects. Carolyn is Chair for Art and Design Advisers Wales and is a member of the Arts Council of Wales initiated Partnership for Young People and the Arts. Carolyn is co-ordinating the Artist in Residence Project and the window glass artwork in the new school. The appointed artists, Catrin Jones and Naomi Leake will run a short series of workshops and develop concepts including design drawings which will incorporate the ideas and imagery of participating pupils. Catrin Jones has been appointed as the artist who will carry out the bespoke art commission for the new School. She lives and works in Swansea, and specialises in the design and manufacture of decorative glass for architecture.
Catrin has worked in a number of schools over recent years. Earlier this year, she used pupils' workshop artwork to devise a glass screen to separate a corridor from the atrium in the new St Thomas Community School in Swansea. At the front of the new Llwynderw school building will be a glass screen, which will run from ground level to the top floor. This is a great opportunity to incorporate a glass artwork into the new building. The artist will carry out a period of research and design, which would allow them to create a piece of art that will add richness to the range of artwork within the building. Workshops will be undertaken with pupils in the school to ensure that the design fits in with the school ethos. Naomi Leake has been appointed as the Artist in Residence for this project.
An Artist in Residence project will run concurrently with the commissioned artwork project. This will involve an artist working with the artchitect, contractor and the school community to realise a joint legacy for all four schools in the area. The aim of the project is to work with the four schools as well as the local community to inspire and enthuse them to become engaged with the new school through participation in various creative projects. These projects aim to inform and feed into the art projects across the four school campuses. Areas of interest include exploring and developing themes and schemes arising from the immediate environment and locale as well as much broader social themes. It is hoped that through the creative process and participation there will be the opportunity to produce and install collaborative artworks resulting from the projects. The Residency will run for twelve weeks. Here you will find information and pictures relating to the Artist in Residence workshops.
