Easter Sunday Trading

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 regulates the opening hours of large shops, unless exempted, on Sundays.

Under this legislation, large stores are prohibited from opening on Easter Sunday.

Large shops are classed as being those with over 280 square metres of space used for selling and displaying goods.

This includes most large shops such as supermarkets, DIY stores, department stores and even some garden centres. Exemptions to the Act include motor and cycle suppliers, petrol filling stations and registered pharmacies.

Catering premises are exempt from this requirement, and shops under 280 sq metres can also trade as normal.
