Swansea is proud of being the birthplace of Dylan Marlais Thomas and also proud to host an annual Dylan Thomas Festival.

"The hunchback in the park
 A solitary mister
 Propped between trees and water
 From the opening of the garden lock
 That lets the trees and water enter
 Until the Sunday sombre bell at dark."

Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea on 27 October 1914, and lived at 5, Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, until he was twenty. During this time, he wrote around two thirds of all his poetry as well as many short stories and numerous letters.

Swansea inspired some of Dylan's most famous work, such as the poem 'The hunchback in the park', the opening of which is quoted above, and the broadcast 'Return Journey', which movingly describes his walk through a Swansea destroyed by the three-night blitz of 1941. Work such as this confirms Dylan's stature as one of the twentieth century's greatest writers.
