Kitchen Waste Collection

image depicting Kitchen waste bin

Kitchen waste is collected weekly from the kerbside in a green bin. The collections are made EVERY WEEK.

You have been provided with 2 bins; a larger bin to keep outside and a handy caddy to keep in the kitchen. Collections of kitchen waste are now made weekly on the same day as your black bags.

We now also provide you with free caddy liners to help keep your caddy clean as well as a special tag to request more bags. These liners are made from a special compostable plastic. Do not use any other type of plastic liner they will not be collected. You can use paper alternatives or wrap food waste in newspaper if you prefer.  To request more bags you can contact the Environment Department on 01792 635600, email recycling@swansea.gov.uk or use the form at the bottom of this page.

Image depicting Collection SearchPlease check our Recycling & Rubbish Collection Search to see if you are on the scheme as there are some properties that we are not able to access with the vehicle we use to collect kitchen waste. If we are not able to provide you with a kerbside collection of kitchen waste we can offer you a free home compost bin. If you haven't already had your free compost bin and would like one contact us on 01792 635600 or email recycling@swansea.gov.uk.

During weeks that include a public or bank holiday, collection days will be altered.  For information on this years collection changes see Holiday Collections.  Collections may also be altered because of severe weather conditions, or other problems.  These changes will be published on the website.

What can I put in the bins?

Yes Please

Fruit and vegetable peelings,  Egg shells,  Tea bags,  Coffee grounds,  Left over cooked food (eg rice, pasta, vegetables),  Meat,  Fish,  Stale bread,  Seeds,  Cereals,  Cheese,  Small items of cardboard food packaging that have been in contact with food or food waste,  Small bones up to and including chicken carcass, lamb bone or anything left over from a typical family Sunday roast

No thank you

Large bones,  Plastic

N.B. We are able to accept cooked food, meat and fish because of the system we now use. Whilst we would never advocate putting this sort of thing into your home composter it is fine for it to go into the green bin for collection. If you would like to know how we deal with this waste you can view our special video "What happens to your Garden and Kitchen Waste?"

Collection Guide

  • Please do not use plastic carrier bags or put any plastic waste in the bin. This will result in the waste not being collected.
  • Paint or write your house number on the bin if you wish.
  • Bins must be out by 7am. on your normal recycling collection day.
  • Put the bins in a prominent position so they are not blocked from sight by gate post or parked car
  • This is a completely separate collection from your green bags and maybe collected earlier/ later than your green bags
