Swansea drivers brush up on new skillsA new driving skills initiative aimed at young Swansea people is set to significantly boost new driver's skills and help them get cheaper car insurance. ![]() The first of five Pass Plus Cymru sessions held in Swansea takes place tonight at Morriston Fire Station and is fully booked up after successful courses were held in other parts of the country. The course, backed by Swansea Council and the Welsh Assembly, has been specially designed to provide new drivers with extra skills to assist in becoming more proficient behind the wheel of a car. John Michael, Swansea Council's Road Safety Officer said, "We're delighted with the response so far. This illustrates that young drivers in Swansea are keen to do all they can to become confident and safe drivers. "The course will give drivers the opportunity to handle all aspects of driving, such as driving on a motorway, which they don't encounter on their normal driving test." One important factor for many young drivers having passed their driving test is the cost of insurance. Pass Plus Cymru is being recognised by many of the UK's leading insurers and the addition of this test can lead to a reduction in insurance premiums. The course is being supported by both Swansea Council and the Welsh Assembly, who are helping to reduce the cost of the course from £140 to £40. Swansea Council is committed to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injury, especially amongst the 17-25 age group. Mr Michael added, "We hope to get more young drivers to take up this opportunity and help themselves become more responsible road users."
