Welcome to the Education Directorate section with essential details on the strategies, services and contacts within the Department.
The Local Education Authority (LEA), which is effectively the Council, has a duty under the School Standards and Framework Act (1998) to raise standards in schools. This is reinforced under The Education and Inspections Act 2006 section 1 of which places a duty on local authorities to promote high standards and the fulfilment of every child's educational potential.
The Education Directorate helps the LEA to meet these and other statutory and regulatory responsibilities as well as providing services on a traded basis with schools.
The Education Directorate's priorities are firmly based on national and local needs. There are statutory requirements to provide a strategic lead as an LEA, ensure support for school improvement, meet special educational needs and promote access, social inclusion and lifelong learning. These are delivered within the context of the local needs of Swansea.
The strategic objectives for the Education Department are captured within the Quality in Education 2020 (QEd2020) vision which aims to:
- Raise standards of achievement and attainment for all
- Improve the learning environment
- Make better use of physical, financial and human resources
