Penyrheol Comprehensive School Update

Penyrheol Comprehensive School is to be boosted by two fund-raising events.

A 70s/80s themed disco is planned for Saturday, June 3, at Loughor RFC, Belgrave Road, Loughor from 7.30pm. Disco gear is optional. Tickets £3. Details: phone 01792 896955.

On Saturday, June 24, from 7.00pm, St Catherine's Church, Gorseinon, is due to host a concert. It is set to feature Dunvant Male Voice Choir, Loughor Town Band, the Penyrheol Comprehensive School Choir and members of the West Glamorgan Youth Choir. May 16th at 14.15

EVERY pupil from Penyrheol Comprehensive School is back in full-time schooling. Pupils from the two year groups not yet back in class returned on Monday, May 15. Year eight are on the Penyrheol site. Year seven are at Gorseinon College's nearby Tre Uchaf annexe for the summer term. It is hoped that all five year groups will be together at Penyrheol for September's start of the autumn term.

May 5th at 14.45

· Parents of pupils in Year 7 should be receiving a letter next week regarding return to school arrangements.

· Penyrheol Leisure Centre is due to re-open on Monday, May 15.  The pool is already operating as normal.

· A series of activities have been organised for pupils.  Details of the activities can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.  Enrolment is at Gorseinon Library.

May 4th at 14.00

· Eight temporary classrooms will be ready for use by Friday with Year 9 pupils returning to site on Monday, May 8th.

· Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 should have workbooks. Anyone who hasn't got one should contact the school directly.

April 28th at 13.45

· Years 10 and 11 will be back in school on Tuesday May 2nd. Other pupils will have lessons and activities in the community with the help of workbooks.

· Year 9 will return to the Penyrheol site on Monday, May 8th.

· On Monday, May 15 Year 11 will go on study leave as they prepare to sit GCSEs and Year 8 will return to the school site.

· In mid-May Year 7 are expected to begin lessons in Gorseinon College's Tre Uchaf site.  The full address and telephone number for the site is: Heol Cae Ty Newydd, Loughor, Swansea. · Pupils not in class between the end of the Easter break and mid May will be mailed new workbooks and offered recreational activities.

· A series of pupil activities have been organised for the week - Tuesday, May 2nd to Friday, May 5th.  Activities at the Youth Centre and Youth Barn start on Tuesday from 10.30am.  Pupils should register there on the day.  Activities at the Scout Hut take place on Wednesday May 3rd only.  Details of the activities can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.  Registration for all activities is from 10.30am to 3.00pm at Gorseinon library.

April 21st at 15.30

·  A timetable has been announced by Penyrheol staff for forthcoming academic activities in the community, commencing on Tuesday, May 2nd.  Details of the times and venues of the activities can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.

April 14th at 08.00

·  All pupils of Penyrheol Comprehensive School are due to be back in class by Monday, May 15.

·  Year nine will return to the Penyrheol site on Monday, May 8.

·  On Monday, May 15 Year 11 will go on study leave and Year 8 will return to the school site.

·  On Monday, May 15 Year 7 will begin lessons in Gorseinon College's Tre Uchaf site.

April 12th at 16.45

·  Members of the public are being urged to take part in the Borders fun day this bank holiday Monday (April 17) in the Fforestfach store. The school has an account with the Fforestfach store.  The fun day is due to feature a readathon, Easter egg treasure hunt, storytimes and face painting.  Volunteers are needed for the readathon element of the fun day, from 10am-6pm. This will involve book lovers sitting in a comfortable armchair, reading a favourite work.  For fun day details phone KJ Fowler on 01792 579578.

·  A karaoke evening is set to give school fundraising a boost.  Song stars are being urged to attend the event at New Lodge Club, Alexandra Road, Gorseinon, on Tuesday, April 18, from 6-11pm.  The event is being arranged by new group Friends of Penyrheol Comprehensive. Anyone interested in the group should email: penyrheolfriends@aol.com

April 10th at 14.45

·  A series of activities have been organised for pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9.  Details of the activities can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.  Enrolment is at Gorseinon Library.

·  CLEARANCE work is starting today on areas of the Penyrheol Comprehensive School campus destroyed by fire.
Investigators from the police, fire service and insurers have given Swansea Council the green light to go ahead.
The process will involve some hammering noise as concrete foundations are broken up, and extra movement of heavy lorries on local roads.
Any disturbance will be kept to be kept to a minimum.

·  A FUND-RAISING dinner for the school raised more than £2,000 on Saturday (April 8). Pupils Scott Holloway, Daniel Owen and David Hodge - all aged 15 - were part of the kitchen team which put together the meal at Kidwelly's Gwenllian Court Hotel. Around 80 diners enjoyed the event, which featured a disco. Auction prizes included a signed Swans football, a digital camera, rugby shirts, guitar, driving lessons and meat vouchers. The hotel's Jacqui Bartels said, "It went very well - we thank all those who supported us. The money is still coming in but we've already topped £2,000."

April 6th at 10.20

·  The Mid and West Wales fire brigade are going to Penyrheol school tomorrow (Friday, April 7th) at 11.10am to hand over a cheque for £1,663 which was raised during last weekend's car wash.

·  Penyrheol school won the Welsh Schools' Football under-14 Cup Final at Garden Village AFC on Wednesday evening 2-0.

April 5th at 13.30

·  The first fundraising dinner in aid of Penyrheol is taking place at Gwenllian Court Hotel in Kidwelly on Saturday night. Year 11 from the school who are on work-experience at the hotel will be participating in preparing meals. Tickets are £20 a head of which £10 will go to the school to replace lost equipment.

·  Don't forget to support your school at the Welsh Schools' under-14 Cup Final at Garden Village AFC this afternoon. Kick off is 5.30.

· A Techniquest Mobile Planetarium is coming to Gorseinon Institute on Friday, April 7th for Penyrheol Pupils years 7, 8 and 9.  Pupils should register and book for this FREE event at Gorseinon library.  Further details can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.

April 4th at 09.45

·  Years 7, 8 and 9 should return work booklets to Gorseinon Library, Kingsbridge Community Centre, Youth Centre Barn and Moriah Chapel at Loughor. Teachers will be there to collect the booklets and give advice.

·  Can parents who want to visit the school please contact the school to make an appointment.

·  The Year 9 football team is competing in the re-scheduled Welsh Schools' under-14 Cup Final at Garden Village AFC at 5.30pm on Wednesday. Come along and support your team.

·  There was success for those from the school who went to Ireland recently. They won the Celtic Enterprise Trophy for the best business stand.

·  The school will be on BBC4 on April 14 when they play Kingston Grammar in the quiz Show "Top of the Form".

April 3rd at 16.20

·  The school entrance off Frampton Road is now open for pupils.

·  The work booklets for Years 7, 8 and 9 are now available to be collected.  Teachers will also be available to discuss issues.

·  The Friends of Penyrheol School holds its first meeting tonight at 7pm in the New Lodge in Alexandra Road, Gorseinon.

·  The swimming pool at Penyrheol will be closed for a few hours on Monday afternoon (April 3rd) so power can be restored to the leisure centre and theatre damaged by fire a fortnight ago.  The next step to re-opening the buildings damaged by the blaze means the pool will be shut from 3.30pm on Monday (April 3rd). It will re-open as usual the following morning (Tuesday, April 4th).   Those who would have been using the pool at that time on Monday are being informed of the work.

March 31st at 12.10

· A series of activities have been organised for pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 next week.  Details of the activities can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.

· Football, golf, hockey and cricket sessions are being held in various locations. Arts, water sports and music activities are also being held.  Further details can be downloaded from the list of documents on the right hand side of this page under 'Downloads'.  Enrolment for these sporting activities is at Gorseinon Library.

· The Under-14 football Welsh Cup Final will now take place at Garden Village AFC on Wednesday, April 5 at 5.30pm.

· A Friends of Penyrheol School fund-raising group is holding its first meeting on Monday, April 3 at 7pm in the New Lodge in Alexandra Road, Gorseinon.  Anyone wishing to help is welcome to attend.

March 30th at 16.30

· Work booklets available at Gorseinon Library, Kingsbridge Community Cetnre, Youth Centre Bard and Moria Chapel at Loughor. Teachers will be there too to give advice.

· A friends of Penyrheol School group is being set up to raise funds. first meeting is New Lodge Alexandra Road, Gorseinon on Monday April 3 at 7pm.

· A fundraising event is being staged at the Gwenllian Court Hotel in Kidwelly on April 8. Tickets £20 a head with £10 going to Penyrheol School School pupils are doing the cooking. Tickets from 01554 - 890217.

March 29th at 10.00

· GCSE pupils in Years 10 and 11 are back in lessons today.

· A design group is being set up to draw up details to rebuild the fire-damaged

School. It will take at least two years to design, plan and build.

· The aim is to have Years seven, eight and nine back in lessons for the beginning of the summer term (Tuesday, May 2nd).  They will have high-quality temporary classrooms.

· Work booklets covering curriculum subjects are being made available for pupils in Years seven, eight and nine can be obtained from Gorseinon Institute, Gorseinon Library, Kingsbridge Community Centre, the Youth Centre Barn and the Moria Chapel at Loughor.  Teachers will also be available at these locations.

March 28th at 16.10

· From Wednesday, March 29th parents can contact the school on 01792 891892.

· Pupils in Years 10 and 11 returning to school on Wednesday, March 29th should use the entrances at the gate near the Annexe and the lane off Brynteg Road.

· Penyrheol swimming pool will re-open to local people at noon on Wednesday, March 29th.  The programme of swimming lessons for primary schools and pool time for swimming clubs will resume on Thursday, March 30th with the usual programme of public swimming lessons starting on Saturday, April 1st.

·  Efforts are being made to ensure users who have booked facilities at the pool or the leisure centre do not lose out. Existing users who have booked facilities will be contacted to discuss their bookings and arrange alternatives or be given refunds.

·  The Leisure Centre, the gym and the theatre were more badly affected by the blaze. The extent of the damage is being investigated in detail before a clearer view can be formed as to when they may re-open.

March 27th at 14.30

· The Year 9 football cup final due to take place tomorrow afternoon has been postponed due to the weather.  A further update will be provided when the match has been re-arranged.

· Pupils in Years 10 and 11 will be returning to lessons in the school Annexe Building on Wednesday, March 29.

· Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 will remain from school at the present time.

· In the meantime, education and learning material will be provided for these pupils from Wednesday, at Gorseinon Library, Gorseinon Institute, the Youth Centre Barn, Kingsbridge Centre and Moriah Chapel in Loughor.

· Recreation and sports activities are also continuing throughout the week. Pupils can enrol at Gorseinon Library.

· A parents meeting is being held on Tuesday evening in St Catherine's Church from 7.30pm.

· The school's choir successfully came through Friday's competition to book a place in the Urdd Eisteddfod.

March 24th at 14:30

· Pupils in year 10 and 11 will be returning to school on Wednesday March 29th. They will be taught in the school annexe which was largely undamaged in the fire. Year 10 and 11 pupils are returning to school due to their impending GCSE examinations.

· Pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 will NOT be returning to school at the present time. However, teachers are preparing education and learning material for pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 which will be available in community locations from Wednesday March 29th. The community locations will be confirmed early next week.

· The Year 9 parents meeting will be held in the school annexe from 4pm til 7pm on Thursday, March 30.

March 23rd at 17:05

· Gas and electricity supplies have been restored to the school annexe and to the swimming pool.

· A total of 17 classrooms will become available as quickly as possible.

· The priority for pupils is to get GCSE lessons going first

Swimming Pool

· This was not damaged by the fire but was affected by the loss of power for a number of days.

· Re-filling the pool is taking place and it may become available to the public next week.

· Existing users who have had bookings at the pool or the leisure centre have been contacted to discuss alternative arrangements where necessary.

· Pupils drop-in centres are open from 10:30am today (March 23rd) and tomorrow (March 24th) at Gorseinon Institute (44 Lime St, Swansea, SA4 4EH. · The Year 9 options forms were lost in the fire, so pupils will need to complete another form. This will be discussed during the Year 9 parents meeting on Thursday, March 30 from 4pm til 7pm.  Completed option forms/books can be taken to Gorseinon Library.

· Parents of Year 9 pupils have this week been sent a letter and their child's report, which explains the situation.

· On Friday (March 24th), the school choir will be competing in the Urdd Eisteddfod.

March 22nd Update at 15:55

School activities

· Swansea Council's Community Regeneration Service has organised a series of activities in the community.

· Daily sports, arts and craft activities are taking place at Gorseinon Youth Centre and Gorseinon Youth Barn between 10am and 3pm

· Pupils can attend an outdoor pursuit trip to Rhosilli this week and every day next week.

· Pupils should register at Gorseinon Library for the activities mentioned above.

School trips

· The school choir will be competing in the Urdd Eisteddfod this week.

· The planned school trip to Pembrey ski centre is going ahead this Friday, along with the trip to Ireland on March 28.

Parents update

· Parents should receive a letter from the school in the next few days.

· A meeting for all parents will be held at St Catherine's Church at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 28.

· The Year 9 parents evening will now take place from 4pm till 7pm on Thursday, March 30 at a venue to be confirmed.

Buildings update

· The school annexe building and two science demountable classrooms are undamaged. Electricity supplies have been restored. Gas tests are on-going.

· A new telephone line providing the latest information has been set up for parents and pupils. The number is 01792 636600.

March 21st Update at 15:00

· A number of classrooms in the school annexe were undamaged.  Power supplies may be restored later this week. It is hoped these classrooms will be ready for use next week (Week commencing March 27th).

· Members of staff are being made available at Gorseinon Library to offer work and advice for pupils. This service will be available from Wednesday, March 22nd between 10.30am and 3pm. They will have revision material for Years 10 and 11 GCSE pupils.

· There will be outdoor pursuits events at Rhossili On Thursday, March 23rd and Friday, March 24th. Any pupils wishing to register can report to Gorseinon Library.  There will be a maximum 48 pupils each day. The bus will leave on Thursday, March 23rd and Friday, March 24th at 9am from outside Penyrheol Comprehensive. Other activities for pupils are being planned.

· This week's entry level examinations will be taking place at Gorseinon College and pupils should report to the reception at the college at 8.45am.

· Thursday's (March 23rd) Year 9 parents event has been postponed by a week. It will now take place on March 30 from 4pm to 7pm at a venue still to be arranged.

· Governors were updated on progress at a meeting on Tuesday, March 21st.

· Parents are being sent letters to their homes over the next few days to fill them in on the situation.

· A noticeboard is also being established at the school gates in the next few days.
