Noise

The Pollution Control team currently investigates in excess of 3000 noise complaints each year.

The most common types of noise the team deals with are:

Domestic Noise - TV's or stereos too loud and musical instruments such as pianos, guitars and drumkits, Animals such as barking dogs, crowing cockerels, DIY and other home improvement work at unreasonable hours, Intruder alarms

Commercial Noise - Noise from entertainment venues including pubs and outdoor events, Ventilation systems, Intruder alarms

Industrial Noise - Noise from factories, Construction and demolition noise, Intruder alarms

Vehicle Noise - Car alarms, Car stereos too loud (but only if the vehicle is parked), Car maintenance and repair work

Noises that we cannot deal with include children or youths causing annoyance, shouting and banging of doors, noise from traffic, military aircraft or civil aircraft.


If you have a problem with noise, our Dealing with a Noise Complaint page explains how complaints are investigated.  When dealing with noise, if the Officers are satisfied that a nuisance exists they will serve a notice requiring the noise to stop, prohibiting it or restricting it.  You can also report a problem or enquire about a noise issue using our Enquiries & Complaints form.

It is always worth approaching the person causing the noise, as people are not often aware that there is a problem. Complaints can often be settled amicably between the parties without the Council becoming involved.

Nuisance can be defined as an unlawful interference with a persons use or enjoyment of land or property (NSCA).
 
This is generally a matter of common sense and treating your neighbours as you would wish to be treated.
