The capital costs of the investment of £1.4 million was jointly funded by Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools and Education programme and the City and County of Swansea.

The 10th December 2014 saw the official opening ceremony of Newton Primary school's replacement classrooms.

Pupils in the Early Years have been enjoying their new classrooms and outdoor learning space since the work was successfully completed by the Council's Corporate Building and Property Services in August 2014.

The new classroom block was officially opened by The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of the City and County of Swansea, Councillor Ceinwen Thomas.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Leader Councillor Christine Richards, Cabinet Member for Education Councillor Jennifer Raynor, local councillors, governing body members and some of the schools neighbours (oh and Santa Claus made a surprise visit to the pupils, taking a well deserved break from his Christmas preparations!)

Glyncollen Primary School

The 11th December 2014 saw the official opening ceremony of Glyncollen Primary school's replacement classrooms.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Leader Councillor Christine Richards, Assembly Member for Swansea East Mike Hedges and local Councillor Andrea Lewis.

The classrooms replaced ageing demountable buildings, while upgrades to the school's IT intrastructure, outdoor access and toilets have also been carried out.

Headteacher of Newton Primary Helena Rees said: "The new classrooms have brought smiles all around and are already proving an inspiration to staff and pupils.

Headteacher of Glyncollen Primary Anna Bolt noted: "The school looks amazing and we are all so thrilled."

The work was part of the Swansea Council's Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 Programme.

Corporate Property and Building Services undertook the work and worked well with the school staff and pupils.  Work was completed in time for the children to start the new school year off in style.

Quality in Education (QEd) programme aims to:

  • raise standards of achievement and attainment for all children and young people;
  • improve the quality of the learning environment;
  • make the best use of human, physical and financial resources.

These schemes follow the authority's successful programme of replacing inadequate and unsuitable demountable accommodation.  A total of 88 temporary buildings have been removed over the last 15 years.
