Friends of Brynydon Park

Community action to get an innovative starpath and new play equipment in a Swansea park.

Bryn-y-don star path

Brynydon Park was looking tired and the play equipment was removed after it was seriously demanded by fire. There were problems with antisocial behaviour in the park and regular fires.

At the initiative of ward members, Communities First organised a door to door survey and then a consultation in the park. From that some local community volunteers came forward.

The community volunteers and local children, supported by the Play Team, designed and chose new play equipment and the ward members secured the funding for the equipment and organised some tidying up of hedges and foliage.

The community volunteers have gone from strength to strength, keeping a watchful eye on a day to day basis and organising regular events in the park. They are now constituted as the Friends of Brynydon Park, with some support from Parks Development.

One of the ward members supported the installation of a 'star path' through the park which uses solar power to light up at night - the first and only one in Wales!
